Decompression Diving

Description

The depth and time limits of Recreational diving are generally considered to be 40 metres and within the no-decompression limits of the dive tables. However many divers are venturing well beyond these limits, or would like to. The aim of the SSI Decompression diving program is to provide the necessary information and training to safely conduct dives beyond the generally accepted recreational limits. It is not the intention of this program to set anyone's limits or to encourage diving to great depths.

Prerequisites

  • SSI deep diver or approved equivalent

  • SSI Nitrox Diver or approved equivalent

  • SSI Stress Rescue Diver or approved equivalent

  • Current diving medical to AS 4005.1 (within 12 months)

  • Minimum 50 logged dives 10 of which must be to at least 30 metres. If no Stress Rescue certification is held minimum dives shall be raised to 75 dives, 15 of which must be to at least 30m

  • 18 years of age

Course Standards

  • Maximum depth should not allow PO2 greater than 1.4 BAR PO2

  • Maximum planned decompression should not exceed 60 minutes

  • Student to Instructor ratio 4:1 or 6:2 with certified assistant (note: certified assistant means a current insured Divecon or instructor who has completed the SSI decompression Diving course )

Minimum Student Equipment

  • Bottom mix tanks - Twin tanks of equal size and material - Tank volume appropriate for planned dive and student gas consumption, may be configured as independent Twins or manifolded twins. (Manifolds must be of isolation type).

  • 2 high performance 1st and 2nd stage Regulators (one with a long hose of at least 1.5 metres) each regulator should be equipped with a submersible pressure gauge (unless using an isolation manifold where one may used)

  • Stage tank - Tank volume appropriate for planned dive and student gas consumption.

  • 1st and 2nd stage Regulator equipped with a submersible pressure gauge

  • Buoyancy Compensator adequate for equipment configuration

  • Redundant depth & timing devices (each computer counts as 1 timer & 1 depth gauge)

  • Redundant lighting system if required for site conditions

  • Exposure suit as appropriate for environmental conditions

  • 2 line cutting devices

  • Dive slate and pencil

  • Surface Marker Bag (SMB) / Lift Bag, minimum lift capacity - 22kg
